Assateague MD
Clothing Optional Beach Etiquette
Nudity
Please limit nudity to the north beach. If you find yourself approaching
or being approached by a textile individual, textiles group or NPS Ranger,
cover up for the short time that they are in the your area. Please put
your blanket and stuff fairly near the Piping Plover boundary signs. That
leaves a fair amount of beach room for the textile walkers to pass by without
"running" up on you.
Law Enforcement
NPS has the authority to enforce Maryland laws. You will get a citation
if you act in an inappropriate manner. So if a textile is approaching you,
just cover up.
Lewd Behavior
Sex or sexual behavior is no more acceptable here than at any other
beach. Family and friends come here to relax, not to be harassed or shocked.
Environment
Try to keep out of the dune vegetation, wildlife habitat and other
environmentally sensitive areas. Staying on established paths will minimize
the impact on this environment. Entry into the restricted Piping Plover
Section is not permitted by law nor is it socially acceptable.
Privacy
Respect the privacy of others. Gawking or staring is rude. Many come
to the beach for quiet time alone and don't want to be disturbed. It's
OK to make friends, but is rude to monopolize a person's time before being
welcomed.
Photography
Even on a public beach, it is courteous to obtain the permission of
your subject before you snap. Not everyone wants to end up in a stranger's
photo album.
Personal Property
If personal property has been obviously left behind or lost, please
turn it into the state or federal rangers. Both agencies run a "lost
and found".
Being Prepared
Bring your own sun-screen, food and plenty of water. Bug spray may
be useful. Don't expect others to share these items. The state concession
stand has a good variety of supplies.
Litter
Always bring a trash bag and try to take out more than you brought
in.
Pets
No Pets are permitted on the north beach.
Landmarks
Try to pick out a landmark, such as a KM marker, before entering the
water. If you are not paying attention, the current can easily put you
50 feet away from where you came into the water. If you get "lost",
after swimming, do not be afraid to ask for help of the locals or the rangers.
Standards
Speak up for our standards. If someone seems to be unaware of our etiquette,
please give them a copy of these guidelines. A good reputation will keep
our beach free of legal problems.
